Storm Drain Stenciling
In honor of the Green Apple Day of service, a group of DES students marked 3 additional storm drains in the DES parking lot with "Chesapeake Bay Drainage" and "Don't Dump" stenciling on a beautiful Fall day in 2015. The students learned the importance of indicating that the contents of the drains will end up in the bay and the responsibility of the school to prevent pollution.
Leaky Faucet Audit
Students performed a Leaky Faucet Audit on sinks throughout the school building during the winter of 2016. In total, over 80 sinks were checked in bathrooms and classrooms. Leaks were found in only 2 sinks. Work orders were submitted to repair the leaks.
Water Conservation Posters
5th grade Green Team members made posters that are on display in the school hallways to promote water conservation by reminding others to do things like turning the water off when done and taking shorter showers.
Watering Plants with Our Rain Barrel
The Courtyard Kids Club that meets weekly with the librarian plans to clean up a section of the DES courtyard later in the Spring 2016, then plant flowers and perennials. The school's rain barrel is conveniently located close to their garden and will be used for watering the freshly planted vegetation.
