Seed Planting
A DES staff member helps collect milk cartons in May 2015 for a Pre-K class project. Pre-K then used the cartons to plant sunflower seeds for Mother's Day gifts. |
Animals in the Winter - February 2016
Students studied animals in the winter. They took a nature walk, sorted pictures of animals by behavior in winter (i.e.,hibernate, migrate, food stores) and read a book about animals in the winter. The photo above is a journal response about what one student learned in the activities. |

Art Sculptures
Each year in Art, 4th graders create sculptures by reusing materials. For instance, items like paper towel rolls, shoe boxes, tissue boxes, egg cartons and many other items that could have otherwise been sent to the landfill have instead found new life as an art sculpture. Students spend much of the year designing building and painting the sculpture that becomes a work of art to keep and showcase. |
Energy Survey
In Spring 2015, fourth graders conduct a school-wide energy survey to help our school improve our energy conservation efforts. In small teams, students visited offices and classrooms to identify ways in which energy can be saved. These notebook pages show the data one student collected. |

Bay Impact Study
Fall 2015, 5th grade students performed an investigation of the school grounds to determine DES's "grade" in relation to its impact on the health of the Chesapeake Bay. The students walked the grounds of the school to collect data and formulate a grade for Bay Impact Report Card. As they walked, they looked for examples of attempts to improve the health of the bay, like a rain garden, or examples of situations that may negatively impact on the bay.
