PTA/F.A.S.T.*
The PTA/F.A.S.T. is an integral part of Solid Waste Reduction at DES. Members of the PTA/F.A.S.T. take empty toner & inkjet cartridges to Staples and empty glue sticks to the landfill for recycling. They dump the bucket in the compost bin after lunches on Waste-Free Wednesdays and they box and mail the empty juice pouches to Terracycle for upcycling.
The F.A.S.T. has also adopted a policy in the 2015-16 school year to send all communication electronically whenever possible in order to reduce the use of paper.
*DES had a PTA up through the 2014-15 school year. As of the 2015-16 school year, DES began a Family and School Team (F.A.S.T.) program.

Girl Scouts
Our local Girls Scout Troop 442 spent 2 days working on the flowerbeds and planters in the front of the school in May 2015. The first day was spent cleaning out leaves and weeds from the area. On the second day the girls planted new flowers in the beds and planters. Their efforts made the entrance to DES a more cheerful place for students as they entered school each day.

Arbor Day Project Plant It with Dominion Power
Each year in celebration of Arbor Day Dominion Power distributes trees to 3rd graders, typically a loblolly pine and eastern redbud tree. With approximately 100 3rd graders, that is potentially 100 trees planted a year!

Reusable Grocery Bags
Each year following the 2nd grade field trip to the Appeal Landfill and Anne Marie Gardens, students decorate reusable grocery bags with messages about Reducing, Reusing, Recycling and Composting. These bags and their earth friendly reminders are then distributed on Earth Day to customers at a local grocery store. The photo to the right shows students working on the bags that will be distributed on Earth Day 2016 at Nick's of Calvert in Prince Frederick. |
