Courtyard Kids Club
The DES Librarian has established a club in the 2015-16 school year that meets weekly called the Courtyards Kids. This Spring, they plan to remove the existing half-dead shrubbery under the media windows and create a garden using perennials and annuals. The kids would like to turn it into a fairy garden. They are considering incorporating some kind of low-tech water feature as well and will use the rain barrel already in the courtyard for watering the plants. Also, they plan to clean up the existing bird feeders, create new ones and add a hummingbird feeder. The ultimate plan will be a more aesthetically pleasing courtyard garden, fairy garden and bird sanctuary. The students would be involved in maintaining it with seasonal plantings and keeping the bird feeders in good repair or making new ones. |
2nd Grade Seed Planting
Mrs. Niemics second grade class planted green beans and other vegetables during their unit on plants in Spring 2015. They learned parts of a plant, then planted seeds and tracked the growth of the plant. In these pictures they are transplanting to take their plants home and continue to watch them grow. |

Schoolyard Learning
2nd graders at DES take learning outside as often as they can. They will sit on a shady hill or in the courtyard to read as a class. Spelling is practiced on a sidewalk with chalk. Students can even earn the privilege of reading outside with a friend by using "Husky Bucks" to buy a pass. |
